Okkyung Lee

Okkyung Lee is a versatile South Korean artist known for her expertise as a cellist, composer, and improviser. Her creative endeavors encompass a wide range of genres, including noise, jazz, classical, and traditional Korean music, resulting in a distinctive and unique artistic expression. Since 2000, Lee has collaborated extensively with artists from diverse backgrounds, both as a soloist and within ensembles. With over 30 albums to her name, including notable releases like "Yeo-Neun" and "Teum," she has continually explored sound and technique. While she is renowned for her improvisational work, Lee has also ventured into developing site-specific compositions that challenge traditional concert norms. Currently, Lee leads the Yeo-Neun Quartet, comprising harpist Maeve Gilchrist, pianist Jacob Sacks, and bassist Eivind Opsvik, focusing on the lyrical aspects of her compositions while evolving her solo repertoire. She has received commissions from prestigious institutions such as the Time Spans Festival, Groupe de Recherches Musicales, and Sonic Acts Festival, among others. Lee has performed at renowned venues worldwide, including the Museum of Modern Art, Whitney Museums of American Art, and Serpentine Galleries. Acknowledged for her contributions to contemporary music, Lee received the Foundation for Contemporary Arts Grant in 2010 and the Doris Duke Performing Artist Award in 2015.
